Too many Geese
Estimated at more than 1 million individuals worldwide, snow geese are believed to be too abundant by scientist. Hunting helps reduce the population and contributes to protecting the American bulrush marsh which stands as the main habitat during the snow goose drop-migration.
Snow goose hunting is a traditional activity at cap Tourmente. Back in the early twentieth century, the Séminaire de Québec, which owned the land at the time, leased portions of the territory to private hunting clubs. The lease came to an end between the Séminaire and the private clubs when the Canadian Widlife Service (CWS) became owner of cap Tourmente in 1969. Three years later the CWS developed a controlled hunting program allowing Canadian hunters back to cap Tourmente.
